Taught graduate-level courses on terrorism and counterterrorism at six graduate schools including work on WMD and related terrorist threats in these courses. Author or co-editor of four books, and author of dozens of articles. Holds the Matthew C. Horner Chair of Military Theory at Marine Corps University, where he previously inaugurated the Adamson Chair of Insurgency and Terrorism (2005-2007). He was an executive and lecturer with the Program on Terrorism and Security Studies of the George C. Marshall Center, Europe.
