:: Dr. J.D. Crouch :: Until May 2007, Ambassador Crouch was Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor. He was a senior advisor to the President on national security matters, chaired the sub-cabinet Deputies Committee, and was second in command at the National Security Council. Dr. Crouch previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Romania where he worked to expand democracy in the region, increase cooperation between the United States and Romania in the global war on terror, and foster Romania's incorporation into Western security institutions including NATO and the European Union. From August 2001 through October 2003 he served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy. He was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense on policy for missile defense, nuclear forces, NATO, Europe, Russia, the Central Asian Republics, the Caucuses and the Balkans, technology security policy, counter-proliferation, and arms control. He has twice been awarded the Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal. He received the Alumni Merit Award from the University of Southern California in 2006 and Military Merit Grand Cross with White Ribbon, from the Kingdom of Spain in 2003. He was the Missouri Deputy Sheriff of the Year for 2000. Dr. Crouch received his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and his Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Southern California.
