DSS graduates have joined a wide variety of federal agencies, including the Departments of Defense, State, Energy, Homeland Security, the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the Office of Naval Intelligence, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Graduates have also gone to work for various corporations in the defense industry, research and analysis firms in the private sector, educational institutions, non-profit think tanks, and as legislative aides and professional staff on Capitol Hill. Numerous former DSS students have attained senior positions in their respective places of employment.

For example, in the federal government, DSS graduates have served as the Secretary of the U.S. Air Force, Deputy National Security Advisor to the President, Assistant Secretary of Defense, Assistant Secretary of State, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, among many other senior government positions.

Throughout the academic year, employer recruitment sessions are held. These focus groups provide the opportunity for DSS students to ask questions about working within an organization, and to develop direct connections with potential employers.
