There is no "typical" career path for DSS graduates. However, below is a general description of options and where some DSS alumni have found employment.
DSS graduates often join federal government agencies, such as the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the Missile Defense Agency, and the Department of State. Other graduates have gone on to join PhD programs, while others have found employment on Capitol Hill. Graduates have also joined corporations in the defense industry, companies engaged in research and analysis, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations with a focus on defense issues and national security policy.
While the DSS program does not have a formal job placement office, the faculty and staff support student efforts at obtaining employment, and the program has a strong alumni network in the Washington, DC area, which also assists in student job placement. This informal assistance has proven to be successful for decades.
